The Physical Education Department enables students to experience a wide range of activities so that they can obtain a depth of knowledge in a variety of sports. We provide an inclusive curriculum for students in which we aim to challenge students, as well as ensuring they have a positive experience in all areas.
The Department comprises of 11 experienced and committed teachers who work hard to provide excellent curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities. Shelton Athletic Football Club are linked to Riddlesdown and provide extensive and outstanding coaching sessions, which have developed the standard of football at the Collegiate.
The school boasts excellent on-site facilities including a brand new 5 court, floodlit netball facility, brand new floodlit 7-a-side AstroTurf pitch, a large sports hall with a full size basketball court and 5 badminton courts, a fitness suite, gymnasium, 2 rugby pitches and 6 football pitches. This gives us multiple activity options. In addition, in the summer we have a full size athletics track, 4 rounders pitches, an Astroturf cricket wicket and 5 tennis courts.
Each student in Key Stage 3 will experience one double-lesson a week, over a two week timetable; both 100 minutes long. These activities will include Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cross-Country, Cricket, Fitness, Football, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Netball, Rounders, Rugby, Softball, Table Tennis, Tennis, Trampolining and Volleyball. In addition, students in Year 8 and Year 9 receive an additional 50 minute PE lesson a fortnight.
Key Stage 4 students also have a 100 minute PE lesson each week and experience the same sports. Non-GCSE students can choose pathways of aesthetics, games or fitness and GCSE PE students do two new sports each half term, as well as 5 50 minute classroom lessons over the two weeks. GCSE students also complete the Sports Leaders course in year 10, where they gain a large amount of leadership skills which they then use to deliver sessions to Key Stage 3 students, primary school students and finish Year 10 by organising and running primary school sports days. GCSE PE is very popular at Riddlesdown and we currently have over 170 students in Years 10 and 11 taking the course.
At Key Stage 5 we offer A-level PE and The Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Sport Development, Coaching and Fitness. Both courses are extremely popular and very successful. Several students go on to study sport at higher education after Riddlesdown and it is something we are very proud of.
Key Stage 4
ENRICHMENT AND CO-CURRICULAR
Students have the opportunity to represent the School at Athletics, Basketball, Cross-Country, Cricket, Football, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Golf, Netball, Rounders, Rugby Union, Swimming, Table Tennis and Trampolining. We enter Borough, County and National competitions with our teams and have lots of success every year. All of our successes are celebrated at our extremely popular annual sports award evening. We have several students that compete at a high level and currently have several students competing at county level and above, with many going on to compete professionally – Kieran Gibbs being our latest success story, who is now an England International.
The sports teams also go on tours each year, with netball and football usually touring around Europe and Rugby making its first long haul trip to South Africa this year.
